Facing the constant challenge of power optimization, design engineers of handheld devices are today using an integrated approach from the architectural level all the way down to the chip level. For every watt saved at the chip level, at least three times that amount is saved in the overall system. With the introduction of the Atom™ processor family, featuring a new low-power computing core delivering performance up to 1.86GHz with a thermal design power specification ranging from less than 5 watts, Intel® helps to cut development time for super-efficient handheld devices.
Based on an entirely new microarchitecture and enabled by Intel®’s hafnium-infused 45nm high-k dielectric silicon technology, the Intel® Atom™ processor is specially designed for targeted performance and low power, while maintaining full Intel® Core microarchitecture set compatibility. This means design engineers can use the same compilers and other software development tools they already use for software development with other Intel® products.
Advantech has developed a series of computing platforms using the Intel® Atom™ processor, from Com-Micro and COM Express computer-on-modules to rugged handheld terminals. Our extensive design support services enable design engineers to develop and test applications quickly, while reducing design time and risk by leveraging its modular board architecture approach with multiple boards designed to work together. The results fuel the boom in handheld mobile devices that feature PC-like capabilities, excellent network connectivity, and long battery life; and they are very much in demand for applications in the medical, gaming, POS, infotainment, transportation, military, industrial automation, security, and many more fields.

COMs provide the benefits of easy installation, maintenance and upgrades. Though small in size, COM's supply all the basic circuitry for complicated CPU architectures, and save a huge amount of development time and effort.

Mobile Clinical Assistants
The mobile clinical assistant (MCA) architecture was defined by Intel® based on enthnographic research, hospital workflow studies, and extensive consultation with healthcare professionals. The MCA enables clinicians to access patient care records at the point of care and document a patient's condition in real-time.
